4 Easy Labor Day Weekend BBQ Recipes

The first Labor Day took place in none other than our fair New York City on September 5, 1882. Officially established to celebrate the contributions of the American worker, it unofficially marks the end of summer. But for us, it also marks the beginning of fall smoking season. (More on that later…)

Since labor day is technically a day off to relax, I don’t like to spend the day in the kitchen or over a hot stove. This year I’m opting for simple contributions to the menu. I’m skipping anything that requires too much of my attention.

While this year will look a bit different, everyone will still be looking forward to the food. I don’t like spending my day talking about my plant-based diet or explaining Pumfu (it’s delicious) so I cook the staples everyone loves with a Pure Grit twist.

  1. Classic Potato Salad - You don’t even have to tell anyone that it is vegan. The only sub is to replace the regular mayo for vegan mayo - no further explanation needed. Ours is super traditional with pickles, onions and celery - it is a crowd pleaser. Pro tip: If you cut the potatoes into bite-sized pieces to boil, you don’t need to cut them again when finishing.

  2. Classic Coleslaw - Make your life super easy by buying pre cut coleslaw mix. I make it the night before as I prefer it well marinated.

  3. Shiitake Bacon - I just like it on everything so I always have some handy. It takes 30 minutes in a 350 degree oven to make with just 5 ingredients that you most likely have in your cupboard. You can cook and store in sealed tight container days in advance.

  4. Smoked Chickpeas - So easy to make and everyone knows what a chickpea is. They only take 30 minutes to cook in the stove-top smoker on medium heat - set it and forget it.  Walk away and prep something else or jump in the pool. I usually make a double batch and use ½ for either BBQ hummus dip or chickpea burgers depending on what I need to bring to the next outdoor BBQ.

There are so many more recipes up on our site to explore, pick a few, and try them out. Grab your stove-top smoker, smoke bags or just some sauce and rub.

Make them yours.

See you at the BBQ,
Kerry
