Happy Earth Day: Let’s celebrate with plants

I love the earth so much that I have a tattoo of it with a peace-sign through it on my, shall we say, lower back. True Story. I attended the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources and the Yale School of the Environment. I worked at the Environmental Protection Agency, focusing on the Clean Air Act. All the way back then, in 1991, we were studying and implementing policy regarding climate change. Seriously. That was 30 years ago. Caring about the environment was overwhelming and depressing. There just seemed like too much to do and not enough time or resources to do it. I did not see the micro wins. I could only focus on the macro loss.

It is hard to do everything right. To feel like you are failing on the regular. Or to ignore it completely because it is just too much. I ran from environmental consulting to the film business because I did not think I was making a difference. It really seemed hopeless. But just like that amazing New Edition song “Every little step I take . . . she will be there . . .” I learned that every seemingly micro thing that I did led to a big impact. From driving a hybrid car to switching to LED lightbulbs to the simple things our parents used to yell at us about: turn off the lights; wear a sweater if you are cold; or, my least favorite that I still abide by as it is drilled into my head - a 5 minute shower. You would be surprised how much you can accomplish in 5 minutes and how much water and energy you save! Each is a micro win.

We launched Pure Grit BBQ with a singular focus to inspire you to pile more plants on your plate through our love of BBQ. Eating less meat helps the environment. So this Earth Day, consider adding meatless days to your week. Below are some resources to learn more about, and celebrate, Earth Day, as well as some links to simple plant-based recipes. Micro wins lead to major milestones.

Thank you for your continued support. We really appreciate it!

Learn about the future of food - The Third Plate: Field Notes on the Future of Food

I just put this one on my Audible wish list.

I love Dan Barber and visited his Blue Hill Stone Barn during the lockdown to buy their fresh produce and food. If you don’t know who he is please check him out on “chef's table” on Netflix. The entire series is amazing.

Our friends at CANAVA who often collaborate with Dan, turned us on to this book and told us it is a MUST. Dan is squarely focused on the future of what we eat and how that affects the planet.
