07 We Ask...Sam Neider

PureGritSurvey_Sam.jpg

Sam and I met while working at 72andSunny, an advertising agency in LA. She was young, kind and cool. Nothing rattled her. She seemed to know who she was at a young age. Thanks to social media we recently reconnected and I feel like I have been able to really see her. She is a musician, surfer and social media expert. She recently fell in love and is engaged to be married to Colin Owens. They are very happy. Colin is also a musician, athlete and fitness model. And while we haven’t met yet, I feel like I already know him. Follow them both on instagram @thecolinowens and @samneider

What is your name/handle? Where do you live? What do you love about where you live? What are you up to these days?

The people, the food, the wine, the music, and the FOLLY BEACH!

I'm managing the brand for a 501c3, the FitOps Foundation! It's incredibly rewarding and a total blast. We empower veterans to find new purpose after their time in the military through the power of fitness, health, service, and community. We take veterans through a 3-week camp where they graduate as certified personal trainers by the end of their time with us. They're fully equipped to launch a new career in fitness and health, providing them a new way to serve their communities. I'm also (always always always) making and playing music, just got engaged to the love of my life, and my nephew, Ryan, just celebrated his 3rd month on planet earth =)

What’s your favorite condiment? Why?

Tough one... It's a tie between Hot Sauce and Chipotle Mayo. Hot Sauce: Recently I've been craving a super smokey flavor with a kick. We do a lot of sandwiches, tacos, breakfast burritos, and different variations of eggs, so adding some hot to it (I think) brings out some of the other flavors we cook with. Chipotle Mayo: Because it's BOMB. I am not a mayo person. I despise mayo, actually... Extra calories and extra fat with no taste... BUT, I have replaced mustard and Bitchin' Sauce with Chipotle Mayo. I think it's because of what I said above (smokey and hot). Adds some more depth to a meal.

What's your favorite BBQ side?

I love a charcoal-burn-blackened sweet potato

What's the most overrated condiment/the most underrated, why?

Overrated: sriracha. It's not that great. Doesn't taste good and overpowers all of the other flavors. Ketchup sucks too, but damn, is Heinz an amazing iconic brand. I'm not a fan of anything that is too vinegar-y, and I don't like tomatoes at all, so ketchup isn't my jam... but speaking of jam…
Underrated: Bacon Jam. If I didn't live in a bikini and/or care about my heart health, I would eat bacon jam straight out of the jar. It's so good -- adds a smokey, salty flavor to everything.

Who is your fave insta cook follow and why?

@adamkenworthy for sure. Gorgeous content, great music choice, and beautiful presentation. I get plating ideas from his content. Does @earthyandy count as a cook? She's my favorite because her smoothies, bowls, and plant-based creations are incredible, and she's adorable. @michaelchernow is fantastic -- he posts great recipes on his IG and his blog, especially for fitness-goal-specific diets and people who are entrepreneurs, but still want to eat healthy food.

Describe your fridge door: Perfectly organized or a chaotic mess? Is there anything in there that you don't remember buying and never use?

Is there a middle ground between chaos and organized? Chaorganized? Our fridge is that. Nothing has a specific place or has been sitting in there for too long, and I remember buying everything.

Fave takeout spot? What city?

Ugh... this is hard. GTA. Venice, CA. Vace. Bethesda, MD. Seamores. NYC. Huriyali. Charleston, SC.

What's your favorite life hack? Any new ones?

Basically anything with a treadmill... Listening to my clients podcasts on the treadmill. Learning on the treadmill (audiobooks, podcasts, etc). Knocking out emails 2 times a day on the treadmill. Get your steps in and train the people in your work-life that you only check and respond to emails in the morning and late afternoon. That's a productive life hack, but my all-time-favorite life hack is Joe Dispenza's "Tuning In To New Potentials" meditation. It's 45min (60 w/ journaling session), and it is legitimately life-changing. His book "Becoming Supernatural" changed my life.

Describe your first post-covid night out!

Lovely and super memorable! My girls and I sat out in Zinque Venice's make-shift cafe in the parking lot, had flatbreads, charcuteries, kale salads, branzino, 2 (maybe 3) bottles of red wine, and caught up for HOURS.

What does pure grit mean to you?

Oh man... this is a good one. It means unadulterated, no-quit, badassery. Per favore scusa le mie parolacce -- it means you can't fuck with it.
